There are at least four beautiful caves close to Stary Smokovec to see. The most famous one out of the four is the Dobsinska Ice Cave (Dobsinska Ladova Jaskina), which is listed on the UNESCO's World Heritage List. In the following, we will introduce those caves to you, supplying all the necessary information, so you will be able to make them part of your High Tatras programme.

Belianska Dripstone Cave (Belianska jaskyna)
These fantastic dripstone caves are 17 kilometers away from Stary Smokovec, on the East side of the Belianska Mountains.

Road to the cave from Stary Smokovec: Tatranska Lesna - Tatranské Matliare - Kezmarkske Zlaby - Tatranska Kotlina
The cave is open since 1882, in 1896 electricity was introduced to lit the cave. The cave is a favourite resting place for several types of bats. Visitors can enjoy the stunning views of dripstone stalactites and stalagmites. The cave is 1 kilometer long, it takes roughly 70 minutes to see everything. In the summer we would like recommend to bring warm clothes for the visit, because the maximum temperate inside the cave is around 5 Celsius.

Vazecká Dripstone Cave (Vazecká jaskyna)
An empire of dripstone stalagmites. This cave is 38 kilometers away from our apartments, on the West side of the village of Vazec.

Road to the cave from Stary Smokovec: Gerlachov - Batizovce - Svit - Vazec
The visitors can access roughly 300 meters of this cave, which is open for the public since 1954. Along stalagmites, there are some dripstone lakes to see in the cave. To watch everything we needed 40 minutes. The general temperature inside is 7 C, so warmer clothes are a must here even in the summer.

Dobsinská Ice Cave (Dobsinská ladová jaskyna)
Probably the most beautiful ice cave complex in the World. It is 44 kilometers away from Stary Smokovec, on the territory of the Stratená National Reservation Territory.

Road to the cave: Poprad - Hranovnica - Vernár - and following road 67-es to the ice cave.
The cave was explored first by Hungarian mining engineers, Jenő Ruffinyi and Márton Szontágh in 1870. The people of the area knew the "ice whole" for a long time - they were taking the ice from there in the summer, to cool food - but Ruffinyi and Szontagh were the first to get inside deep to explore the cave. What they found was more than 110 thousand cubic meters of ice in forms of icefalls, ice pillars, ice stalagmites. They found one of the biggest ice cave of the World! At some places the ice is 26 meters thick. The cave is a home for 12 different types of bat. The full length of the cave is more than 1 kilometer. 475 meters are open to visitors. The general temperature of the cave is -4 Celsius, so warm clothes are a must. Visiting time cca. 50 minutes.

Demanovská Ice Cave (Demanovská ladová jaskyna)
This is the hanging and standing dripstones paradise, 64 kilometer away for Stary Smokovec, in the Lower Tatras National Park.

Road to the cave: Tatranska Polianka - Gerlachov - Batizovce - Svit - Tatranska Strba - Uhorska Ves - Zavazná Poruba
The cave is well known since 1917 to the people of the area.The full length of the cave is around 2 kilometers, but only 650 meters are open to the public. A visit will last roughly 45 minutes. The general temperature of the cave is 6-7 Celsius, so a pullover could be enough.

Demanovská Dripstone Cave (Demanovská jaskyna Slobody)
This dripstone cave is right next to the ice cave and 8 kilometers long. It has huge dripstone waterfalls and stunning pillars. There are four different types of bats living in the cave. The public can visit more than 2 kilometers of this cave. It might take 3 hours to watch everything. The general temperature is 7 Celsius, so warmer clothing is recommended.
